Where to Shred: The Best Wake Spots in AZ This Summer

We had a blast on the mountain this season, but now we’re more than ready for sunshine, boat days, and good times on the lake. Summer’s officially here, and there’s no better way to beat the AZ heat than with some wakeboarding and wakesurfing.

After plenty of digging (and a few days on the lake ourselves), here’s our go-to list of the top spots in Arizona to wakeboard and wakesurf this summer!

1. Lake Pleasant (Peoria, AZ)

Perfect for: Beginners and intermediates

Why ride here: Lake Pleasant is just 45 minutes north of Phoenix and is one of the most accessible lakes in the state. The wide open water, scenic desert backdrop, and availability of rental boats make it ideal for newcomers. There are plenty of calm coves to escape the weekend chop, making it a solid training ground if you're just getting into the sport.

Pro tip: Get there early or on weekdays to avoid heavy boat traffic. Also, check out wake lessons or gear at local shops like us before you head out!

2. Bartlett Lake (Tonto National Forest)

Perfect for: Smooth water seekers

Why ride here: Bartlett Lake is a bit more low-key than Lake Pleasant, and that’s exactly what makes it great. With less boat traffic and glassy morning conditions, it’s one of the best places to really dial in your technique. If you’re getting up on a wakeboard for the first time or chasing your first 360 on a wakesurf board, this lake is a great choice.

Bonus: There are no homes or developments around the lake, giving it a truly remote, unplugged vibe.

3. Saguaro Lake (Mesa, AZ)

Perfect for: Riders chasing scenic backdrops and laid-back energy

Why ride here: Saguaro Lake is nestled between canyon walls and saguaro-covered hills, making it one of the most beautiful spots to ride in the state. It’s about 45 minutes from the East Valley and has a great mix of open water and protected coves. The narrow channels help cut down wind and waves—perfect for smooth wakes.

Local tip: Start early and finish with lunch at the Lakeshore Restaurant right on the marina.

4. Lake Havasu (Lake Havasu City, AZ)

Perfect for: A full weekend riding trip

Why ride here: If you’re ready to take your wake game on the road, Lake Havasu is the ultimate summer destination. It’s massive, vibrant, and full of energy. While parts of the lake get choppy with party boats, early mornings in the coves around the island or north of the lake offer ideal wake conditions.

What makes it unique: The combo of clear blue water, sunny skies, and endless places to explore make Havasu feel like a mini vacation every time you go.

5. Roosevelt Lake (Tonto Basin, AZ)

Perfect for: Serious water time and wide-open space

Why ride here: This lake doesn’t get the same hype as others, but it should. Roosevelt is one of the largest lakes in Arizona and often flies under the radar, meaning more space and less wake-chop from other boats. If you’re looking for long, uninterrupted sets and time to really progress, Roosevelt delivers.

Good to know: There are campgrounds and nearby spots to post up for a full weekend. Bring your crew and make a trip out of it.

Final Thoughts

Arizona might be known for deserts and cacti, but the lake scene is seriously underrated here. With chill coves and wide-open water, it’s a wakeboarder’s and wakesurfer’s dream!

We'll see you out there! 👀🌊🌵
